CHILDREN DAY CELEBRATION :
SALAM, 29 OTHERS FORMS ALLIANCE AGAINST CHILDREN ILLITERACY IN NIGERA
A member of the National Assembly (NASS) representing Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency in Osun State, Hon. Bamidele Salam and other twenty-nine Federal Lawmakers have joined hands to fight illiteracy in the children of Nigera.
This was contained in a press statement issued on the occasion of the 2020 edition of Children’s Day Anniversary, where the representative made case for the “immediate enforcement of free and compulsory education for all the children in the country”.
Hon. Salam maintained that it was regrettable that some Nigerian children are still begging for alms, roaming the streets, hawking, loitering and ‘engaging in other demeaning activities during school hours’, despite the clear provision of “Chapter 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and section 15 of the Child Rights Act 2003”.
Hon. Salam and his group members who insisted that every child has a right to free and compulsory education in Nigeria are prepared to prevail on state governments across the country, to implement the section of the constitution to the fullest.
“Since the primary duty of every government is to ensure the welfare and security of citizens, it is of utmost importance that children, being a vulnerable segment of the society be given utmost care and attention in order to secure them from the future consequences of lack of education”, Hon. Salam said.
He explained that the parliamentary group will engage with governments, civil society organisations and the private sector to ensure that deliberate, sustainable and measurable policies and programmes are implemented to drastically reduce the menace of out of school children in the next 5 years.
Hon. Salam therefore urged parents, teachers and other stakeholders to work together with government agencies in providing children with greater access to educational opportunities that will develop their potentials as future wealth creators.
