MODELLING FARM SET-UP THAT WILL ADDRESS ECONOMIC, SECURITY SITUATION IS OUR TARGET – SEN. ORIOLOWO
A Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, Sen. Adelere Adeyemi Oriolowo has assured a secured and peaceful coexistence of his constituents through farming.
The Iwo-born politician who stated this in a chat with Nigerian Platform in his country home at the weekend, stressed the need to “protect and provide for the existence of others, if you want to enjoy your own existence”.
This according to him, was part of his efforts to make life meaningful for all his people, and make them co-exist peacefully, regardless of their tribes or state of origin.
He decried the Fulani’s way of rearing cattle, describing it as disturbing, while there are better ways of doing it with less stress and better results.
Sen. Oriolowo disclosed that feedlot method of cattle rearing, which is one of his cardinal farming agenda is the best to be adopted by the Fulanis to end the herdsmen/farmers crises in Nigeria.
According to him, ‘this means you have to cage the animals and feed them there. An average Fulani man will tell you it’s impossible but we have proof here, that it is possible. I have been doing it successfully since 2013, you can raise up to 60 heads of cattle on a plot of land of 50 by 100fts, it is very visible and practicable. You only need another piece of land of that size to plant grass with which you feed them”.
The Senator is currently working on a farm estate and name it after the Osun State Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, who according to him, “has made the environment so conducive for development. He is a Governor that has created an enabling environment for progress and development”.
“We have already started a farm estate in Gbongan, we are targeting modelling a farm set-up that will address both economic and security situation of this country. We are going to promote Cocoa on the 70% of the land, because we have a Cocoa factory in Ede, my Senatorial District but there is no Cocoa to fill it” he said.
The food crops are not left out in his plan which is to be included in the Senator’s next budget for the benefit of his constituents, beginning from next year.
He explained that “twenty percent of the land will be used for food crops because no one can do without eating, before Cocoa gets matured, you must eat something”.
He promised that the feedlot method of cattle rearing will also be modelled across all the Local Governments in Osun West Senatorial District.
